Yuletide: Army Intensifies Security Operation In Southeast Nigeria

The Nigerian Army has launched ‘Operation Python Dance’ in the Southeast, as part of efforts to tackle acts capable of threatening the nation’s sovereignty.

The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu says it has also begun operation crime-free `ember’ months in the geo-political zone.

The deputy spokesman for the division, Colonel Sagir Musa, explained that the essence of the operation was to curb prevalent security challenges during yuletide.

He warned that the Army would not hesitate to apply the Rule of Engagement to deploy troops and appropriately deal with secessionists who pose threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Giving an insight on the one month exercise, Colonel Musa said the Army would focus on armed robbery, kidnapping, violent secessionist attacks and communal clashes among other criminal acts from November 27 to December 27.

The military personnel further explained that the Army would collaborate with other security agencies in the exercise in the five eastern states to achieve the desired objective.

He said the directive was from the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, who he said had appraised the huge security challenges and scenarios across Nigeria.

“The prevalent security issues such as armed robbery, kidnapping, abduction, herdsmen-farmers clashes, communal clashes and violent secessionist attacks, among others, would be targeted.

“In this wise, the exercise would be multi-agency in nature, whereby the Nigerian Army and other security agency are expected to synergise and collaborate extensively,” NAN quoted Musa.
