Mass Housing: FG Seeks Partnership With Investors

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has restated the need for synergy between the Federal Government and the private sector to provide mass housing for Nigerians.

Mr Fashola noted that the government must find a way to exploit the private sector participation in the sector, especially in the area of local content manufacturing of building materials.

He expressed optimism that the development would help to reduce the prices of building materials and the cost of the houses.

The minister made the observation on Friday during an inspection visit to some selected sites and polystyrene manufacturing company in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

He explained that the visit was a follow up to the claims by some sponsors in housing sector during the Affordable Housing Summit held earlier in the year in Abuja that they had all the machinery to partner with the Federal Government in delivering affordable housing to Nigerians.

Fashola who expressed satisfaction with what he saw, stressed that the concepts of acceptability and affordability were significant and must be factored into any system the government intends to adopt in the sector.

He added that although the low and middle income earners in Nigeria might not be interested in most of the houses presently available, he said the government was committed to initiating policies that would address the situation.
